Hydroponics is a method of growing plants without soil
Instead of relying on the soil to provide the various elements required for plant growth, ingredients containing these elements are dissolved in the water so when the plants are irrigated, they are fertilized at the same time. To anchor the plants so that they remain upright, inert materials such as gravel, scoria, river sand, perlite, vermiculite or rockwools are often used. Whether grown in soil or without soil, plants require exactly the same conditions:
-
Adequate light
-
Nutrients
-
Warmth
-
Water, and
-
Protection from pests or environmental hazards, such as frosts, hail, strong winds.
Advantages of growing plants without soil:
-
There is no digging, hoeing, weeding or hard physical work
-
It requires less time, less space and much less water
-
It is more productive, more controllable and more predictable
-
There are no soil borne plant disease causing organisms.
